With quick scanning and multiple tools for stopping malware before it infects your computer, the paid version is a solid spyware remover. The well-designed interface makes getting started a breeze. The program can perform a number of scans, including Quick Scan, which blazes through common trouble spots such as Internet Explorer cache files. We found scan times to be fast; even the Full System Scan took under five minutes on our test machine. The app displays scan results clearly, showing file and registry locations, threat level, and a concise description of the threat.

The trial features include real-time protection, a pop-up blocker, a browser monitor, and a key logger guard. The Live Update feature works smoothly, letting you know at start-up if there are significant updates. New features in this latest version include the option to see detailed scan results, spider scanning technology, rootkit scanning, alternate data streams (ADS) threat detection, kernel-level malicious-process detection, and minor enhancements to the graphical user interface. It also has a fairly liberal definition for cookies and other threats, so be sure to examine your results carefully.

The full version is one of the better antispyware tools available, but without the ability to remove threats your computer will remain infected. Although we consider the full Spyware Doctor one of the most effective antimalware apps available, the anemic trialware makes it hard for users to fully realize its potential.

Intel Montevina Integrated Graphics to be 3x faster than GMA X3100

Intel is readying its GM45 Express chipset for its next-generation Montevina mobile platform, set to be launched in Q2 2008. It will have a new GMA X4500 integrated graphics core, which will be three times faster than the current GMA X3100 in the GM965 chipset. It will support DirectX 10 and has Clear Video technology for high definition video decoding.
There are two entry-level chipsets for the Montevina platform that will serve alongside the GM45 - the GS45 and the GL40. The GS45 will not have built-in HDMI and DisplayPort support and the GL40 will have lesser graphics performance. They will be launched after the initial platform launch.
Some notebook companies have noted that Intel's current graphics weakness is its driver support.

Site owners will soon be getting a way to see what their users are searching for within the site, potentially making it easier for them to reorganize, or prioritize the what's on the page. Users will also have their choice of several third-party search tools that work with the new search analytics, along with Google Custom Search, Google Mini, and Google's enterprise search appliance.
The service is also rolling out a new "Events Tracking" section for keeping tabs on all sorts of user interaction including widgets, embedded movies, and outbound links--the links that take visitors off your site. The latter of which has been available for some time from services like CrazyEgg and MyBlogLog ClickTagging, but a welcome addition nonetheless. The other cool thing is that the new JavaScript code will update automatically with any additional features Google decides to add later on down the line.
Users of Urchin, the analytics platform Google purchased two years ago, will also be getting access to a new limited beta of the software. The service isn't aimed at consumers but lets businesses access metrics and analytics internally on their own servers using the same colorful interface.

Podcast: HD DVD? Blu-ray? How about neither?

HD DVD or Blu-ray? Could the smartest choice be neither of the two? The high-definition DVD formats are competing for your dollars, but the best investment may be to hurry up and wait. Sales of both formats aren't doing nearly as well as plain old DVDs, and the true future of at-home HD movies will probably be fully digital. CNET News.com's Erica Ogg explains why neither format may be in it for the long haul.
The wait is almost over for Mac fans. Apple announced the official release date of the next-gen Mac operating system, nicknamed Leopard. Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard will go on sale October 26, and Apple claims the long-awaited OS includes 300 new features. One of those features is called Time Machine, which may explain all the delays. News.com's Caroline McCarthy has the full details.
And more Apple news: The company announced a price drop for DRM-free tracks bought from the iTunes Plus Music Store. Apple hasn't commented officially on the price drop, but it may have to do with Amazon.com's recent decision to sell DRM-free songs for between 89 and 99 cents.

Asus officially announces Eee PC

It's official: Asus has announced that the Eee PC (which we've been tracking since August) will be making its way to North America within the next few weeks. The 2-pound, 7-inch, Linux-based laptop will be available in three configurations priced from $299 to $399.
Though the company has yet to offer details on North American specs, it seems reasonable to believe that we'll be seeing the three top models listed on Asus' global site. The highest-end Eee PC 8G includes an 8GB solid-state drive, 1GB of RAM, a built-in Webcam, and a promised 3.5-hour battery life. The Eee PC 4G incorporates a 4GB drive, 512MB of RAM, a Webcam, and the 3.5-hour battery; while the low-end Eee PC 4G Surf lacks the Webcam and promises only 2.8 hours of battery life. (The entry-level 2G Surf, with a 2GB drive and 256MB of RAM, likely won't be available in the U.S.)

Despite including "PC" in the product name, Asus has gone to great lengths to avoid calling the Eee PC a computer: today's press release describes the device as "a 7-inch gadget designed for first-time mobile Internet gadget users." The emphasis is on a simplified interface that lets users access e-mail, send text messages, and share files. Add in your favorite Webware, and it's possible you might not even need a full-fledged laptop.
Given the fate of that other Linux-based mobile Internet device, the Palm Foleo, we'll be keeping a close eye on this one.

Intel blows through financial projections

Intel on Tuesday stomped all over estimates of its quarterly financial performance--not only Wall Street's, but its own.
Three months ago, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker in September predicted revenue of $9 billion to $9.6 billion for the third quarter of 2007. Then in September it raised it to a range of $9.4 billion to $9.8 billion.
The real number: $10.1 billion, a 15 percent increase from the year-earlier quarter. And net income of $1.9 billion, or 31 cents per share, a 43 percent annual increase. Revenue exceeded First Call analysts' average expectation of $9.6 billion by nearly half a billion dollars, while net income was a penny more than the 30 cents per share expected.
Wall Street analysts will get to spend some more quality time with their spreadsheets shortly. For the last quarter of 2007, they have been expecting revenue of $10.4 billion, but Intel set its guidance to $10.5 billion to $11.1 billion.
Intel ascribed the results to strong sales of its processors--the most it ever sold in a quarter, though average prices remained flat. Also contributing were strong sales of chipsets, which support the central processors, and of flash memory. With costs of the transition to 45-nanometer manufacturing process dropping, gross margin--a measurement of how much revenue turns into profit--increased from 46.9 percent in the most second quarter to 52.4 percent in the third.

Chief Executive Paul Otellini tooted his horn and indicated he expects to do more tooting next quarter.
"A combination of great products, strong and growing worldwide demand, and operational efficiency from our ongoing restructuring efforts led to record third-quarter revenue and a 64 percent year-over-year gain in operating income," Otellini said in a statement. "We see each of these elements continuing to improve into the fourth quarter. We are very pleased with the results and optimistic about our business."
Intel stock rose $1.17, or 4.6 percent, to $26.65 in after-hours trading.
In the third quarter, Intel sold 2 million quad-core processors. Rival Advanced Micro Devices has just launched its first quad-core chip, code-named Barcelona, and doesn't expect significant revenue until the fourth quarter. That's a sharp reversal from two years ago, when AMD was riding high after stealing market share from Intel.
Also Tuesday, Intel promoted Stacy Smith to chief financial officer, replacing Andy Bryant, who held the job since 1994. Smith, who was assistant CFO, still will report to Bryant, though, whose new title is chief administrative officer.
Otellini indicated the move was relatively routine. "These moves are part of our long-term succession planning," Otellini said on a conference call with analysts.

Yahoo summoned to Washington over Chinese arrests

The chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee is summoning Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang to Washington to talk about "how the Internet company gave false information to Congress about its role in a human rights case in China that sent a journalist to jail for a decade," according to a release from the committee chairman's office.
Chairman Tom Lantos has asked Yang and Yahoo General Counsel Michael Callahan to appear at a hearing on November 6.
"Our committee has established that Yahoo provided false information to Congress in early 2006," Lantos said in the statement.
A Yahoo spokeswoman released a statement saying that Callahan's testimony was accurate. The company has said that the testimony was accurate at the time it was given in February 2006 and that executives only learned what the investigations were related to after that time.
"The House Foreign Affairs Committee's decision to single out Yahoo and accuse the company of making misstatements is grossly unfair and mischaracterizes the nature and intent of our past testimony," the statement said.
"As we have made clear to Chairman Lantos and the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Yahoo has treated these issues with the gravity and attention they demand," the statement continued. "We are engaged in a multi-stakeholder process with other companies and the human rights community to develop a global code of conduct for operating in countries around the world, including China. We are also actively engaged with the Department of State to assist and encourage the government's efforts to deal with these issues on a diplomatic level."
Yahoo has been sued by several Chinese political dissidents who complained that Yahoo provided information to the Chinese government that led to their imprisonment for allegedly distributing state secrets over the Internet. One man, Shi Tao, was arrested in 2004 by Chinese officials after Yahoo cooperated with a request to provide information about the Yahoo Mail customer.
Callahan testified last year that Yahoo did not know the nature of the Chinese investigation when it provided information about Shi.
Lantos ordered a probe into the matter in August after the Dui Hua Foundation, a human rights group that focuses on China, released a document that it said shows that the Beijing State Security Bureau had told Yahoo in writing that Shi was suspected of "illegal provision of state secrets to foreign entities."

IBM services buoy third-quarter earnings

IBM on Tuesday reported a 6 percent profit increase in the third quarter of this year, riding a strong performance from its services division that compensated for a decline in its hardware business.
The company earned $2.36 billion, or $1.68 per share, which narrowly beat out analysts' profit estimates.
The computing giant said the revenue growth in its services division was the highest since 2003. Services contracts in the quarter totaled $11.8 billion, up 12 percent year over year.
Revenue from its Systems and Technology group was $4.9 billion, down 10 percent. Excluding the impact of the sale of its printing division, revenue was down 6 percent.
In a statement, IBM CEO Samuel Palmisano said that IBM was working through a "transition" in its hardware business. Sales of its mainframe servers dropped 31 percent compared with the same period last year.
In its high-margin software business, IBM's revenue was up 7 percent, aided by acquisitions.

Video stores getting crushed by Web

Video stores appear to be heading the way of the car hop and drive-in theaters.
Movie Gallery, which operates under the names Movie Gallery, Hollywood Video, and Game Crazy, filed for bankruptcy on Tuesday, according to a story by Bloomberg. The collapse of the country's second-largest video-rental chain is staggering when one considers that only two years ago, Movie Gallery's stock was trading at $33.
On Tuesday, the stock closed trading at 22 cents, less than the cost of a movie rental.
Netflix and video-on-demand serves being offered cable companies have cut deeply into the traditional video-rental business. Video stores can't compete with the convenience of the Web.
Sure, I'll miss the strategically placed ice cream and Junior Mints at the store checkout, but I won't miss late fees, out-of-stock titles or the hassle of driving there in the first place.
But companies like Netflix shouldn't be too quick to take a victory lap.
Netflix users order films on the Web and then the company delivers DVDs through the mail. The service may beat the old brick-and-mortar guys, but I wouldn't think twice about dumping it the second someone offers a wide range of films at a good price and then delivers high quality images to me over my Internet connection.

Teenager claims to have easy iPod Touch jailbreak

A 13-year-old hacker claims to have developed code that would let you put third-party applications on an iPod Touch without having to take a computer science class.
AriX sent us a press release Sunday promoting iJailbreak, an automated program that allows third-party applications to run on the iPod Touch. It doesn't work for the iPhone, and it's only available for iPod Touch owners who are using Intel-based Macs. I don't have an iPod Touch at my disposal right now, so I'm unable to test whether it actually works, but some users on MacRumors.com reported that it worked.
Ever since Apple released the 1.1.1 software update for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch in late September that broke older third-party application installers, hackers have been hard at work searching for a new way to bypass the restrictions. A preliminary jailbreaking application was released last week, but it required a great deal of expertise to get up and running. Erica Sadun, a writer for The Unofficial Apple Weblog, installed that iPod Touch jailbreak Friday evening but warned, "This is not ready for prime time, kids. Don't do this at home."

The iJailbreak program, however, is apparently designed for those who would like to put other applications on their iPod Touch but aren't crack coders. According to the press release, "the only user interaction required for iJailBreak to work is to restart the iPod Touch using the button on the top of the iPod. The application does the rest." AriX said he spent about nine hours writing a program in AppleScript that automatically does the scripting required to install the update released last week.
He said there's a slight risk that the program could "brick" your iPod Touch, but it's pretty easy to restore an iPod Touch to the factory settings if something goes wrong. As we noted last week, we don't link to these kinds of programs, but it's called iJailBreak. That's iJailBreak. One more time, in case you missed it, iJailBreak.
